When a child began choking at school, Caremark Rotherham and Sheffield’s Support Worker Busayo Hassan did not hesitate. Even though the child was not the client he was there to support, he acted quickly, which speaks volumes about the calibre of people we employ.

Drawing on his training and staying calm under pressure, he stepped forward to act. His quick actions dislodged the blockage from the child’s throat. Ultimately, he helped to save a young life.

Busayo joined our team three years ago. Originally from Nigeria, he came to the UK to continue his education, completing a master’s degree in advanced mechanical engineering. But while his academic background is in engineering, his motivation has always been rooted in helping others.

“After finishing my master’s, I was on a search for self-fulfilment and searching for something I really wanted to do with my life,” he says.

“I wanted to use the knowledge I had to solve an actual problem in the world – to help improve people’s lives.”

That desire led him into care work, where he found a role that matched both his practical skills and his values. Busayo says he especially enjoys supporting young people. He also enjoys helping them work towards their goals.

“I really enjoy doing what I do and this job has helped to improve myself as a person,” he says.

He could see the child needed urgent help

Busayo works with a range of clients with complex needs, all of whom he has been trained specifically to support. He takes pride in making sure he is fully prepared for each person he works with. By regularly revisiting care plans, he keeps his knowledge up to date. This means he can provide the best possible support, guided by our Case Leaders and Clinical Leads.

That preparation proved crucial during the incident at school. While accompanying his own client, Busayo noticed that another child was choking. Staff were already responding, but he could see the child still needed urgent help. Although the child was not in his care, he relied on the training he had received and stepped in.

A credit to Caremark Rotherham and Sheffield

“I stayed calm and performed the Heimlich Manoeuvre and this resulted in him being able to cough out the item which was dislodged in his throat” he explains.

“It was just pure instinct and using the training I have received at Caremark Rotherham and Sheffield.”

His story is a powerful reminder of the dedication, humanity and professionalism that our staff bring to their jobs every day. Moreover, it shows how their readiness to act can make a difference far beyond the clients they are directly supporting.

Busayo, you are a credit to our organisation.
