Olawale Yusuf is a valued member of the Caremark Rotherham and Sheffield team, supporting young people with a range of complex care needs to live fuller, more independent lives at home, in school and in the community.

Olawale first developed an interest in caring for others from an early age, when he helped to look after his younger siblings. Supporting them with daily routines, getting ready for school and building their confidence helped him realise how rewarding it can be to make a positive difference in someone else’s life.

For the past two years, Olawale has been a Support Worker with our organisation, helping our young clients to develop confidence, independence and overall wellbeing.

He values the training and support he receives

Olawale values the training and support he has received from our team, which has helped him build the confidence and skills needed to respond calmly and appropriately to different situations. He takes a positive, person-centred approach, using reassurance, de-escalation and distraction techniques to help young people feel safe, understood and supported.

“I find the role very rewarding, especially when I sees the young people I support enjoying every day experiences such as bowling, games, visits to the park and other community outings,” he says.

“Helping someone become happier, more confident and more independent is what makes complex care so meaningful for me.”

Drawing on his background

Olawale has also found ways to draw on his farming background in his native Nigeria to his care work, including supporting a client with farm-based activities. His previous experience helped him engage with the activity confidently and support the young person in something they enjoyed.

Outside work, Olawale is passionate about football. He enjoys playing five-a-side, watching matches from leagues around the world and playing football-based video games,

He says shared interests such as football and gaming have also helped him build positive relationships and trust with some of the young people he supports.
