Achieving similar goals as a Support Worker
Charles Ihemadu studied law in the hope of bringing equality and justice to those in need – and now he says he is achieving similar goals as a Support Worker at Caremark Rotherham and Sheffield.
His first experience of the care sector came when he joined our organisation while studying for his master’s degree at Sheffield Hallam University. Charles found the work so rewarding that he continued after completing his studies and has now been with us for over three years.
Charles is part of our team supporting young people with complex needs to attend school and enjoy activities in the wider community.
Consistency is key to delivering excellent care
“I see it as reducing inequality, allowing everyone to enjoy community spaces and places like the cinema, bowling alley and seaside,” explains Charles.
For Charles, consistency is one of the most important parts of delivering excellent care. Our organisation aims to keep regular teams in place wherever possible, helping clients feel calm, reassured and supported by familiar faces.
“We work hard to ensure we have the same rota of clients and that consistency is very important because it calms and reassures clients to see the same face that they know. “It brings me great joy to see the positive impact we can have on their lives and also their families through the respite care we can provide,” says Charles.
Making a difference to clients and their families
Charles has seen first-hand how the right support can make a difference not only to clients, but to their families too. He recalls one mother who was able to take driving lessons while Charles supported her child. She went on to pass her test and buy a car, opening up a whole new world of opportunities for the family. Other parents use the precious hours of respite to socialise, rest and reconnect with friends.
Outside work, Charles enjoys writing in his journal, reading and travelling. He is a fan of Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin and plans to combine that interest with his love of travel by visiting Croatia this summer to tour locations used in the television series.
Books, films and videos can also help Charles connect with the young people he supports, although he is always led by their interests first.
“Game of Thrones is a bit old for many of them, so it’s more likely to be a conversation about a princess movie,” said Charles.
“I know all the songs from Frozen!”
