International Day of Charity: 3 Ways to Show Your Support
International Day of Charity is the perfect occasion to ask yourself: what can I do to make a difference in my community? With so many great initiatives out there, you might find yourself feeling a bit overwhelmed when choosing what to do. But don’t worry—we’ve prepared a detailed list that will help you select a charitable activity that fits your routine and personality.
1. Donate to an Organisation on International Day of Charity
Is there a cause you’ve always wanted to support but never took action on? The International Day of Charity is the right time to act on your thoughts and contribute to bringing positive change to the world! Start by deciding which causes are closest to your heart. Is it environmental issues, supporting children in developing countries, or perhaps helping people with disabilities in your own community?
Once you have identified your passion, do some research. Find out which charity organisations can make a direct impact on the cause you’d like to support. Look into how the funds are used and who benefits from them. For example, at Caremark, we decided to sponsor Canine Partners, a charity that trains assistance dogs to support people in their homes. Caremark staff have met the dog trainers and have even volunteered, witnessing firsthand the positive impact these dogs have on the lives of people with disabilities who cannot afford this type of specialised assistance.
Finally, once you’ve chosen the charity you’d like to support, make your donation. In most cases, this can be done easily by visiting the charity’s website and selecting an amount to donate online. However, some charities may have stalls or shops in your local area, giving you the opportunity to donate in person.
2. Volunteer
Consider two simple things: what are you good at, and which cause is closest to your heart? Combine the two, and find a volunteering role that matches your personality and interests. This will make the experience more enjoyable, and you might be inspired to continue volunteering beyond the International Day of Charity. In fact, some charities offer taster sessions to help you determine if a particular volunteering role is a good fit for you—and vice versa.
Are you more of an introvert? If so, you might enjoy working with animals or participating in a beach cleanup.
Are you an extrovert? In that case, you might prefer activities that involve close interaction with the community, such as fundraising around town or working in a charity shop.
No matter who you are, there are countless options to choose from!
3. Host a Fundraising Event
You can host a fundraising event on the International Day of Charity or any other occasion that presents itself as a good opportunity to organise a gathering for a good cause. For instance, at Caremark, we host an annual Macmillan Coffee Morning. This is a great opportunity to catch up with colleagues, friends, or family over coffee and cake while donating a few pounds to support cancer research. Not only are you contributing to the community, but you’re also creating memories!
Apart from Macmillan Coffee Morning, there are many other types of events you could organise. For example, some people promote marathons and encourage others to join in or cheer them on, all while raising money for charity along the way. Another option could be to organise a charity concert. Community choirs often hold concerts to raise funds for local causes, but you could even do this with your own band!
After reading this article, we hope you have a clearer idea of how you can make a contribution on the International Day of Charity—and any other day of the year!
