Making a vow

Throughout her life, Naseem Yunis has suffered from health problems and as a child spent a lot of time in and out of hospital That experience opened her eyes to the dedication shown by health professionals and led her to making a vow as to her own future.

“It made me determined that, when I was able to, I would work in a job where I was able to give something back,” said Naseem.

“When my own mother suffered ill-health, I nursed her and that made me confident I could work in the care sector.”

Naseem has worked at several care companies but for the past four years has been with Caremark Kirklees – and she hopes to be with us for many more years to come.

“I have worked at other companies where I was just referred to as ‘her’,” said Naseem.

“Here everyone is part of the Caremark family, there is always a friendly word to each other as well as a high level of professionalism to ensure the best service for customers.”

Within a few weeks of joining Caremark Kirklees, Naseem was named Carer of the Month and now, four years on, she has claimed the title again for January 2025.

“The award came as an amazing surprise, to know that the work you do is appreciated by customers and the company is lovely,” said Naseem.

“The key is to get to know your customers as early as possible, understand their needs and how they like things done. If you can also help them to smile and have a giggle well that makes things more enjoyable for everyone.”

Naseem, 52, continues to have bouts of ill health and has recently returned to work after a spell in hospital.

She said: “I’m delighted to be back at work and Caremark have been wonderful, especially Katie our Care Manager who checked on me regularly. If I thanked them a million times it would not be enough.”

Outside of work Naseem likes to relax by meeting up with friends and “catching up on the gossip”. Her daughter, Samah, is due to get married this summer so there’s been lots of shopping and planning and after the wedding Naseem hopes she can enjoy a holiday in Pakistan with her husband Syed.

To anyone else thinking of becoming a carer she has this advice.

“Give it a go and see how it feels. You’ll soon know if it is for you and if it is you’ll find it the most rewarding job in the world.”
