With the days getting longer and the weather beginning to warm up, Embracing Spring feels especially inviting as spring is officially on the horizon here in Greenwich. For our clients and their families, this change in season brings a wonderful opportunity. It allows them to step outside and enjoy the fresh air.

At Caremark Greenwich, we know that supporting independent living isn’t just about providing excellent care at home; it’s also about helping our clients stay connected to their local community. Furthermore, getting out and about after a long winter has profound benefits for both physical and mental well-being. When you are embracing the spirit of Spring, these benefits become even more important for older adults.

Here is a look at why stepping outdoors this spring is so beneficial. We’ve also included a few of our favourite accessible spots across the Royal Borough of Greenwich! By embracing Spring activities, you can make the most of these locations.

Embracing Spring

The Health Benefits of a Spring Stroll

1. Boosting Mood and Mental Health: After months of staying cozy indoors, a change of scenery can do wonders for the mind. In addition, exposure to natural light increases serotonin levels. This helps to lift the mood, reduce feelings of isolation, and stave off anxiety or depression. Notably, embracing Spring can help enhance mental health and mood, making this season especially positive.

2. Soaking Up Vitamin D: Safe exposure to the gentle spring sunlight helps the body naturally produce Vitamin D. This vitamin is essential for maintaining healthy bones, teeth, and a robust immune system. Certainly, by embracing Spring and its sunshine, you support overall wellness.

3. Gentle Physical Exercise: A gentle walk is fantastic for cardiovascular health, joint mobility, and maintaining muscle strength. Regular, light exercise can also help to improve balance, which is a key factor in falls prevention. Embracing Spring walks and active habits supports physical wellbeing naturally.

4. Social Connection: Whether it’s chatting with a neighbour, saying hello to dog walkers, or simply enjoying the lively atmosphere of a local park, getting outside encourages social interaction. As a result, this keeps our clients feeling engaged with the world around them. In this respect, embracing Spring helps foster new connections.

Fantastic Local Green Spaces to Explore

We are incredibly lucky in Greenwich to have an abundance of beautiful parks and historic green spaces right on our doorstep. If you are looking for somewhere lovely to visit with a loved one, or with the support of a Caremark care assistant, here are some fantastic, accessible local spots. In particular, these parks are perfect for embracing Spring and enjoying nature.

Well Hall Pleasaunce, Eltham

A true jewel in South East London, Well Hall Pleasaunce is a Green Flag Award-winning park steeped in history. With connections to the Tudor monarchs and the famous children’s author E. Nesbit, it is a fascinating and beautiful place to visit. The park features fully accessible paths that wind through spectacular themed areas, including an Italian garden, a rose garden, and a tranquil woodland glen. In addition, the historic 16th-century Tudor Barn and the peaceful moat provide a stunning backdrop for a gentle afternoon stroll. There is plenty of seating available. This makes it the perfect place to sit, rest, and watch the ducks! For those embracing Spring, Well Hall Pleasaunce is ideal for relaxing outdoors.

Greenwich Park

While famous for its steep hill leading up to the Royal Observatory, Greenwich Park also has plenty of flat, highly accessible areas perfect for a gentle spring stroll. The beautiful Flower Garden and the stunning Rose Garden (located near Ranger’s House) offer smooth, wide pathways and plenty of benches for resting. This is ideal while taking in the spectacular spring blooms. By embracing Spring, you can enjoy these gardens at their very best.

Charlton Park

Boasting the historic Charlton House to the west of the site, this Green Flag Award-winning park is large, level, and grassy. Its flat terrain and smooth, accessible pathways make it an excellent choice for wheelchair users. Those who feel a little unsteady on their feet will also find it suitable. Additionally, Charlton Park is a wonderful location for embracing Spring and spending quality time outside.

Avery Hill Park, Eltham

This large, open parkland is notable for its splendid trees and the famous Greenwich University winter garden (a magnificent hothouse). The park has recently benefited from redeveloped footpaths, making it highly wheelchair accessible. It also features easily accessible public facilities and a great café for a post-walk cup of tea. For many, Avery Hill Park offers the perfect setting for embracing Spring excursions.

Parks and Green Spaces in Coldharbour

The Coldharbour area offers some fantastic, open green spaces that are ideal for a refreshing breath of fresh air. Places like the Coldharbour Playing Fields or the scenic, tree-lined expanses of The Course offer lovely, breezy walks with views over the hillside. For a quieter, pleasant rest, Altash Gardens in the Mottingham/Coldharbour area provides a peaceful spot with mature trees and grassland. Therefore, it’s a great local environment to watch the spring wildflowers begin to bloom and to fully embrace Spring in every way.
