A rewarding new chapter
For Chanel Devine, joining Caremark Rotherham & Sheffield has been the start of a rewarding new chapter. One where she can make a real difference every day and ‘marvel’ at the impact she is having.
Before becoming a Support Worker, Chanel worked at McDonald’s for four years after leaving school. While she gained valuable experience, she knew she wanted a role that felt more fulfilling and gave her the opportunity to support others.
Since joining Caremark in February 2026, Chanel has quickly found her feet and thrived as part of the team.
Built a strong bond
One of the people Chanel supports is Andrew, who is 18 and lives with cerebral palsy. He uses a wheelchair and is neurodivergent, with autism and ADHD. Because Chanel is 22, the pair are close in age. As a result, they have built a strong bond through time spent talking, laughing and sharing interests.

Most recently, Chanel and Andrew have been watching Marvel film re-runs together ahead of the release of Avengers: Doomsday in December. They are both excited about this upcoming film.
Chanel is also hoping for another reason to celebrate because she is taking her driving test on Andrew’s 19th birthday. She would love to pass so she can take him to see the film.
“Andrew and I get on really well. We have a laugh, we talk about the things he enjoys, and it feels nice to know he is comfortable with me,” says Chanel.
Andrew’s mum has shown appreciation for the support Chanel provides
Chanel’s positive impact has also been recognised by Andrew’s mum, Lesley, who wrote to Caremark to share her appreciation for the support Chanel provides.
“Chanel has fitted in extremely well and has quickly become a valued part of the care team. She is friendly, approachable and very talkative, which has helped create a relaxed and positive atmosphere,” says Lesley.
Lesley said Chanel has built “a really good relationship” with Andrew by taking the time to engage with him, communicate with him and understand his needs. This helps him feel comfortable and at ease in her company.
She also praised Chanel’s attitude towards learning and development, describing her as eager to learn, receptive to guidance and keen to develop her skills and knowledge. This means she can provide the best possible support.
“Her friendly personality, willingness to learn and ability to build a good rapport with Andrew are all greatly appreciated. It is important that good work is recognised, and I feel she deserves to know that her efforts are noticed and valued,” Lesley adds.
A fulfilling career in complex care
For Chanel, care work has offered exactly what she was looking for: a career with chance to do something fulfilling, build meaningful relationships and make a positive difference in someone’s daily life.
“It is really rewarding to see the difference you can make, even in small moments. I’m still learning, but I feel proud to be part of Andrew’s care team,” Chanel adds.
Her story is a reminder of the difference compassionate, person-centred support can make — not only for the people receiving care, but for the families who see their loved ones grow in confidence and comfort.
