Cooking Lessons for Home Care Staff

Caremark North Herts & Stevenage regularly goes above and beyond for they people they support. This month, they offered unique culture training, offering practical, cooking lessons for home care staff for traditional English favourites. The first was making seasonal treats, apple crumble and plum crumble.
The idea cam from the Community Engagement Manager, Sharon Stevens who recognised staff genuinely want to do more for customers. She visited a customer and live in carer at home with all the equipment and ingredients to make apple & plum crumbles.
This flexible approach to upskilling and bridging cultures reflects our commitment to person centred care. It ensures each individual’s tastes, cultural preferences, and dietary needs are respected. By teaching carers to cook healthy, home-made meals, we reduce reliance on ready-prepared foods and support nutrition, independence, and comfort. These practical cooking lessons for homecare staff are rooted in person-centred care, informed by best practice.
Teaching simple recipes encourages clients to become more engaged in daily life and increase social interactions. The kind gesture delighted the 91-year-old customer, who even enjoyed two helpings of plum crumble in one sitting. This story shows how person-centred care and practical, in-home cooking sessions bring joy while supporting nutrition and independence. Similarly, we bring the benefits of cooking classes into the home. We adapt activities to each person’s needs, delivering person-centred care one recipe at a time.
Benefits of Cooking Lessons for Home Care Staff
Cooking activities in the home can support dementia care by engaging multiple senses smell, taste, touch, sight, and sound which can evoke positive memories and reduce agitation. Structured, familiar tasks like washing fruit, mixing crumble topping, or setting a timer provide gentle cognitive stimulation and a sense of routine. Simple, step-by-step instructions and visual prompts make it easier to participate safely. Person centred care is essential here: adapting tasks to the individual’s abilities, preferred recipes, and cultural background increases comfort and success. As part of staff training, staff learns best practice for cueing, validation and reassurance during cooking sessions. As a result, staff create calm, dignified and enjoyable experiences for people receiving care. Similarly, our in-home sessions prioritise safety and engagement while reflecting best practice from care home cooking classes.
Together, these approaches show how cooking activities can support dementia care at home and in structured, supervised settings.
Simple Recipe Examples
- Traditional fruit crumbles (apple, plum, or mixed berries), made with brown sugar and wholemeal flour.
- Jacket potato with chilli con carne or tuna.
- Soft scones served with fruit compote or yogurt.
- Hearty soups like, leek and potato, carrot and lentil with low salt.
- Mashed potato fish cakes using tinned fish, herbs, and soft breadcrumbs.

These recipes are simple, familiar, and adaptable for different dietary needs. Easy to chew and easy to tailor for allergies or intolerances. These activities also promote person-centred care by letting clients choose flavours, toppings and textures they enjoy. Furthermore, we include these recipes in staff training to help everyone participate meaningfully. Carers support clients safely at home while following the age-appropriate approach used in care home cooking classes. In many care home activities cooking classes, these same recipes foster confidence and independence; we deliver those benefits in the home as well.
