She treats customers like her own relatives
Family matters to Elle-May Staley and when she’s providing home care support with Caremark she aims to treat customers the same as she would her own relatives.
And Elle-May, 19, has experience of that. Shortly after joining Caremark Mansfield & Ashfield she gave up her job in order to care for her grandfather Stuart who had broken his hip in a fall.
“He is a very private man and when he came out of hospital, I gave up my job to support him,” said Elle-May.
“He’s much better now, can get about using sticks and so I have been able to return to work.”
She loves making a difference
At school Elle-May had studied travel and tourism but when she applied for jobs she felt companies wanted people with experience or as an apprentice.
“The apprentice wages on offer weren’t very high and I have a car to run so I thought I’d give care a try and I’m really glad I did,” said Elle-May.
“I love the job, meeting new people, helping them to live in their own homes, making a difference.”
Elle-May feels her experience helping her grandfather has benefitted her in her return.
It’s important the customer is in control
“You have to have a caring nature and good communication skills,” she said.
“I always appreciate I am going into someone’s home, I don’t assume anything, I spend time listening to the customer, understand how they want things done. It’s very important they have that control.”
Elle-May says she hopes to take advantage of the opportunity to gain care qualifications whilst in the job and says she thinks she’ll always prefer to be out and about rather than office based.
Outside of work it’s all about her family.
“I have a brother and sister and lots of aunts and uncles so a day off is spent visiting and catching up with news,” she said. “The first person I visit is my grandad to see how he’s doing.”
