Her greatest wish was to remain at home
When Helen Day was widowed, her greatest wish was to remain at home. This was the home she had shared with her husband, Leslie, for more than 30 years. Thanks to the support of Caremark Mansfield & Ashfield, she has been able to do just that. As a result, she continues to lead an active and fulfilling life.
“This is my home; it’s the place I know, and I didn’t want to have to leave and go into a care home,” says Helen.
“Caremark have been great. They visit three times a day, and I really enjoy the social company and having someone to chat to. I’d be bored without them.”
Now aged 68, Helen also enjoys weekly trips to the supermarket. She uses a walking trolley to support her mobility. In this way, she can remain independent. She also has somewhere to sit if she becomes tired.
Reassurance and practical support
Having one of her carers with her provides both reassurance and practical support.
“It’s a comfort having a carer with me, because if I get too tired I can just sit down and they can push me around the aisles,” she explains.
“I like to keep active, and going to the shops means I can buy the things I like.”
Helen previously received care from another provider, but she switched to Caremark Mansfield two years ago on the advice of her husband. The difference, she says, has been significant.
Caremark are much better
“The old company were terrible – they left medicines all over the place and once nearly gave me my husband’s tablets,” says Helen. “
I switched to Caremark and I’m glad I did. They’ve been much better.”
Today, Caremark provides support three times a day. They help Helen with personal care, household tasks, and regular outings. Because of this, she can continue living safely and happily in her own home.
When she’s relaxing at home, Helen enjoys watching daytime television, with The Good Doctor among her favourites. Her house is also often filled with music from ABBA or the sounds of her favourite film, Mamma Mia.
“I like a singalong,” she says with a smile, “and the carers enjoy it too.”
