At 69, Philip Buxton has faced more challenges than many. He lost the sight in one eye as a child following measles. Later, as a young man, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Over time, his health conditions forced him to retire early from his career making light fittings and chandeliers. In recent years his mobility has also been severely affected.

After suffering a series of falls while out shopping, social services became concerned about Philip managing safely on his own. They suggested he seek support from the Caremark Mansfield & Ashfield home care team. That recommendation proved life‑changing.

With a personalised care plan in place, we now visit Philip every day. Our team supports him with getting up in the morning, washing, preparing food, managing medication and carrying out his weekly shop.

Philip

Reliable and consistent care

As Philip is now limited to just a few steps within his home, having reliable and consistent care has made a significant difference to his daily life.

“They have been excellent – I couldn’t fault any one of them,” Philip says.

“They help me get up, have a wash and some food. It makes such a difference to be able to have a shower, feel refreshed and ready for the day.”

Although Philip can no longer get out and about, his enthusiasm for life remains strong. A lifelong passion for astronomy, sparked as a teenager watching the moon landings, still brings him great enjoyment. He even had the opportunity to meet renowned astronomer Patrick Moore during a lecture tour. While he can no longer use his telescope, Philip continues to follow the night sky through NASA and other astronomy websites.

I can enjoy my music with the help of Caremark

Music also plays a central role in Philip’s life. He is a devoted fan of 1960s and 1970s pop, with The Beatles and ABBA firm favourites. Being able to remain in his own home, surrounded by familiar comforts and the music he loves, means a great deal to him.

“I like to be in my own place with my own music, and I can do that with the help of Caremark,” Philip says.

“I look forward to seeing them and having a chat every day.”
