Disability Pride – Our Hot Topic for July
Our hot topic for July is Disability Pride as July each year is Disability Pride month. This month has been celebrated since 2015. The team in the office has created this hot topic board for July. Don’t you think it looks great?!
Significantly, this month is an opportunity to raise awareness of disabilities, start positive conversations and celebrate the diversity and differences of the disabled community.
What is Disability Pride month?
The month originates from the US. In 1990 a law was passed, called the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), to prevent people with disabilities being discriminated against.
Accordingly, up until this point, people with disabilities have not always treated equally because they didn’t have access to the same opportunities.
England, Scotland and Wales have a similar law. The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) was passed in 2002. Thereafter, the Equality Act 2010 replaced the DDA.
Whereas people in Northern Ireland are protected by the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.
Over time Disability Pride has evolved from a day to celebration to a month long event.
