Wishes she had done it sooner

Often sons and daughters follow their parents into care but in Denise Easterbrook’s case it was the other way around – and now she just wishes she had done it much sooner!

Before joining Caremark, Denise spent 22 years working in retail, so a career in care was not originally part of the plan.
It was her son, who worked for Caremark at the time, who encouraged her to give it a try and six years later, she says:

“It’s the best decision I ever made, I only wish I done it a very long time ago.”

Now a Senior Carer Denise was recently the April winner of our Key Performance Indicator scheme monthly league table, which is our way of recognising, celebrating and rewarding great care.

The high standards she sets for herself in care

Denise achieved a very impressive KPI score of 33 out of 35 and this reflects the high standards she sets for herself and the genuine care she shows to the people she supports every day.

“I was really surprised when I discovered I had won and even though I don’t do this job to seek a reward, it was a lovely feeling to know I am appreciated,” she says.

Denise has become a familiar and reassuring face for her regular customers. Seeing the same people consistently helps her build strong relationships and understand each person’s preferences, routines and individual needs. For Denise, that continuity is one of the most rewarding parts of the role.

She explains: “I have my regular customers and you build up a bond and get to know their like and dislikes and everything else.”

I do it because I love what I do

One customer told the team that Denise understands exactly how she likes things to be done and said she did not know what she would do without her. For Denise, those moments mean everything.

“I do it because I love what I do,” she says.

“But it’s nice when the customers say, ‘Thanks very much for what you’ve done today,’ or ‘I couldn’t do without you.’ It’s nice that they appreciate you for what you do.”

Outside work, Denise enjoys spending time at home and doing a little gardening. She is also looking forward to visiting her daughter and three grandchildren in upstate New York.
