There are moments in care that happen beyond planned visits, beyond care plans and routines. These moments truly reflect a caring presence when it mattered most. They often say the most about the people who provide support every day. At Caremark, we believe that great care is about more than completing tasks. It is also about recognising when someone needs help, responding with compassion and making a positive difference wherever possible.

Recently, we received a heartfelt message from a member of the public about one of our Care Assistants, Taka. Her kindness and professionalism left a lasting impression during an unexpected situation in the local community.

A calm response in a difficult situation

Early on a Sunday morning, a local resident was trying to help a confused lady who appeared unable to find her way home. After accompanying her to a property she believed was hers, they were unable to gain a response from inside. The lady became uncertain whether the house was familiar after all.

At this point, Taka was leaving a nearby care visit when the resident approached her for assistance. Although she did not know the lady, Taka immediately took the time to help.

Using the calm, patient approach that is so important in care, she spoke with the lady and helped reassure her. She was able to gather information that others had struggled to obtain. Her professional manner helped bring clarity to an understandably stressful situation and ensured the lady remained supported and safe.

The value of compassion and professionalism

Supporting people who are confused or vulnerable requires more than practical skills. It calls for empathy, patience, strong communication and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

According to the member of the public, Taka demonstrated all of these qualities. They explained that they “couldn’t have been more fortunate” to have her there and were deeply impressed by the caring and professional way she handled the situation.

For care professionals, these skills become second nature through experience, training and a genuine commitment to helping others. What might seem like a small act of assistance can have a significant impact on someone’s wellbeing and safety.

Working together to keep people safe

The situation was ultimately resolved when a police officer attended and was able to help the lady return safely to her home. The property was, in fact, the correct address. Other occupants were able to assist once they had been alerted to the situation.

While the outcome was positive, the member of the public felt compelled to contact us because of the difference Taka made during those uncertain moments. Her willingness to stop, listen and support someone she had never met helped ensure the lady was cared for until further help arrived.

Making a difference beyond the care visit

Stories like this reflect what we mean when we talk about making a difference beyond the care visit. Our Care Assistants are part of the communities they serve. Their commitment to helping others does not begin and end at the front door of a client’s home.

Whether it is providing reassurance, noticing when someone may need support or simply taking the time to help a person in need, these actions embody the values that sit at the heart of quality care.

We are incredibly proud of Taka for the compassion, professionalism and dedication she demonstrated that morning. We are also grateful to the member of the public who took the time to share their experience and recognise the positive impact she had.

Thank you, Taka
