Why education in social care is increasing in importance?
Anyone working in a care setting will know just how important it is to be knowledgeable of conditions that those in their care may have.

This is essential when it comes to caring for those with dementia, as it can be tricky to know how best to deal with certain situations, especially if an individual is tired or confused.

Fortunately, a growing number of educational offerings are available to aid those in the care sector, including specific degrees in Dementia Studies.

Since 850,000 people live with the condition in the UK, and that figure is expected to rise to one million by 2025 and two million by 2051, the need for these tools is growing. The figures from the Alzheimer’s Society reveal the scale of the issue in the UK, although there are plenty of individuals out there who are looking to make a difference.

Why knowledge is an essential part of top-quality care

One such example is Caremark Worcester and Malvern Hills’ Managing Director Caroline Balmer, who has recently completed her degree studies while still carrying out her managerial responsibilities.

Having taken part in a two-year distance learning course, she set up her own home care enterprise half way through and continued to operate her business alongside her studies.

Ms Balmer explained that her own experiences from during her career in the care sector had helped her to understand how dementia can impact on individuals and their families.

Learning alongside her job enabled her to enhance her knowledge and improve care practices – it was only a matter of months between setting up her Caremark home care business and being registered with the Care Quality Commission.

Her awareness of dementia has enabled her staff to provide a quality service that meets the varying needs of people with the condition.

Being able to access educational services and resources is vital in this regard, while knowledge can then be passed onto others to enhance the care offering further.
