A job she is passionate about
Flexibility of hours at Caremark Redcar and Cleveland allows Jess Columba to work in a job she is passionate about as well as take care of the other two loves of her life – her dogs and horses.
Jess, 22, has always enjoyed spending time with her grandparents and felt this was good experience for a career in the care sector.
“I treat every client the way I would want people to care for my own grandparents,” said Jess. “I really enjoy helping and chatting with them and the bonus is I get paid.”
Jess has been a competitive show jumper from a young age and her achievements in the sport include appearing on TV after reaching the finals of the prestigious Bramham International Horse Trials.

The small things make the biggest difference
She has two horses as well as two dogs – Buster and Dusty – which takes up all her time outside of work.
“You can vary shifts from a few hours in length to all day or night and that enables you to strike a balance with your other commitments – whether you have horses and dogs like me, young children or whatever,” said Jess.
She has progressed to a role as Field Care Supervisor which involves overseeing home carers and ensuring clients receive the best possible service. This still allows Jess the regular contact with customers which is the part of the job she finds most rewarding.
She says getting to know each customers as an individual, gaining their trust is the key.
“It’s often the small things that will make the biggest difference to a customer’s day,” said Jess. “I support around 50 people and I know how each of them likes their tea and their bed made.”
Conversation is key
Reports from carers can prompt action from Jess.
“Recently, a carer reported a customer seemed to be having more difficulty getting out of a chair so we looked to see if it needs raising or replacing,” said Jess. “We are always checking to see if there’s a need for a handrail, new frame, a hospital check, anything that can make life easier.”
Conversation is key and Jess’s animal friends have proved a bonus in that regard.
“I make a point of asking customers if they’ve had a recent visit from family how it went,” said Jess. “They will often ask about my horses and dogs and to see photos. It helps build trust and hopefully they will then feel able to talk to me if there is a problem.”
