World Alzheimer’s Month is an international campaign held every September.
World Alzheimer’s Month is an international campaign that takes place every September. During this time, organisations around the world work together to raise awareness of dementia and its impact. Dementia affects millions of people worldwide, along with their families and friends. Therefore, the campaign aims to increase understanding of dementia, challenge misconceptions, and ensure that people living with the condition know where to find support..

What is Alzheimer’s disease?
Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that mainly affects older adults. However, it can also develop in people under the age of 65. When this happens, healthcare professionals refer to it as young onset Alzheimer’s disease. The condition causes problems with memory, thinking, and behaviour. Over time, it affects more aspects of a person’s daily life and independence. As a result, people living with Alzheimer’s disease often require increasing levels of support..
How does Alzheimer’s disease differ from other types of dementia?
Many forms of dementia exist, and each one progressively damages the brain.
Researchers believe that Alzheimer’s disease develops when two proteins, amyloid and tau, build up abnormally in the brain. These proteins form structures known as plaques and tangles, which damage brain cells. Alzheimer’s disease also lowers the levels of chemical messengers in the brain, known as neurotransmitters, making it more difficult for brain cells to communicate with one another.
As the disease progresses, more brain cells die, parts of the brain shrink, and neurotransmitter levels continue to fall.
Different types of dementia cause different symptoms. However, one of the most common early signs of Alzheimer’s disease is difficulty with memory.
