Despite securing an Information Management Degree from Bristol University, Awais Younas found he couldn’t find a job and so, with a young family to support, he looked to other professions and now he can’t see himself doing anything else than being a carer.

Before moving to the UK, he had been living in Pakistan and cared for his elderly grandparents when they came out of hospital.

“That experience made me think I might be suited to home care support and so I applied to Caremark Leeds Bradford,” said Awais.

“I’m really glad I did, I’ve been here two years now and it’s an amazing job.”

The flexibility of a role with Caremark meant Awais could build his hours around his family meaning he got to spend time with his three young children whilst also bringing in a full-time wage.

“I feel very supported in my role, my fellow staff are excellent, and the management have your back,” said Awais. “If there’s ever a problem I know that help is just a phone call away.”   

Through choice, Awais can work over 40 hours a week and says the more he does, the more he enjoys the role.

“I’m 38 but with this active role I feel I’m still in my twenties,” he said. “The clients are wonderful people, they may face severe challenges such as dementia or mobility issues and it is so rewarding each day to be able to help them.”

When he’s not at work Awais enjoys time with his wife and children and planning the annual family holiday which this year is to Cardiff.

“We went to Wales last year and really enjoyed it so we’re going back to Cardiff,” said Awais. “It can be so expensive for a family to go abroad whilst you can have a lovely beach holiday here in the UK which is affordable.”

His advice to anyone thinking or applying for a home care support role is to give it a go.

“You have to show patience and be able to encourage people,” he said. “If you are only interested in money then this role is not for you, the key is to care for people.”
