When Mariam Ikpemosi Yusuf moved to the UK from Nigeria, she was stepping into a new country, a new culture and starting a new chapter in her care career.

Just a few months later, she has already settled into life with Caremark Leeds. She is earning praise from both customers and colleagues for the calm, capable and compassionate way she supports people in their own homes.

Mariam had already worked in care before joining Caremark, having spent around six months as a Care Assistant in Nigeria. She also worked for several months as a Customer Service Representative before moving to the UK. This experience has helped her communicate clearly and adapt quickly to different people and situations.

Although she is still relatively new to the country, Mariam says she has settled in well. She describes herself as a quick learner with good adaptability skills. These qualities have been important as she has got used to the role, the routines and the realities of domiciliary care.

Working for Caremark has been a positive experience

Mariam says working for Caremark has been a positive experience so far. She enjoys the idea of visiting customers in their own homes and supporting them in familiar surroundings.

Like many people starting in home care, her first call was not easy. Mariam admits that one early customer made the experience feel difficult. However, she was reassured by the way the office listened and responded. That support has stayed with her.

Mariam says: “I really like that Caremark listens to both employees and customers. That support makes a big difference when you are new, and it makes me feel I can build my future here.”

Mariam has already made a strong impression. She recently received lovely feedback from Irene, the wife of our customer Michael. She speaks warmly about visiting their home.

“Michael is actually very nice and so is Irene,” says Mariam. “They are a very lovely family. I really, really love going to their house.”

I am a quick learner with good adaptability skills

She has also been praised by Awais, one of her Caremark colleagues, who has noticed how skilled Mariam has become when hoisting another customer. For Mariam, that feedback is another sign that her confidence and ability are growing quickly.

Outside work, Mariam enjoys listening to music and going for walks. Walking, she says, helps her think and it is another way she has been finding her feet in a new place.

Moving to another country on her own is a big step. However, Mariam has approached it with the same calmness and determination she brings to her care work.

“I am a quick learner,” she says. “I have very good adaptability skills.”
