A little bit of help for Shirley • Caremark Kirklees

We all need a little bit of help from time to time and for Shirley, this has helped her to continue living in her own home.

Shirley, 88, has lived in the same house for over 50 years. Raising a family of four children with her husband and local GP John.

When her children left for university, Shirley began a new career as an antiques dealer, specialising in textiles and costumes from Victorian times up to the sixties.

“I worked out of an antiques centre and people would bring all sorts of interesting items in. It’s amazing what can turn up from a house clearance, “ she says.

After John died, Shirley continued to live in the home they had shared. Daughter Victoria lives nearby and was able to pop in regularly whilst her other children in the UK, France and Greece made regular visits.

But things changed after Shirley developed rheumatism and then suffered a couple of falls that required hospital treatment.

“In hospital they won’t release you until they are sure there is appropriate support in place,” said Shirley.

“I’d always looked after myself, but it got to the stage where I just couldn’t. I don’t need any personal care, just a bit of help around the house.”

Shirley and her family spoke with Caremark Kirklees and a support package was put in place which sees a care assistant visit regularly to help Shirley with domestic chores.

“I like the fact that it is now usually the same girl, Michelle, who I get on well with,” said Shirley. “If I am up to it I like to help with cleaning and we do it together but if I’m not up to it, too tired, then she knows exactly how I like things and does a good job. She is a lovely ironer!”

As well as domestic support, Shirley’s carer Michelle was also able to take her to a recent appointment to get a flu and covid jab.

“I’ve been in this house for over 50 years, and I want to stay here, I don’t want to go into a care home” said Shirley.

“Most people would like to stay in their own home and the support from Caremark allows me to do that and gives my family peace of mind.”
