What can I do to prevent and control infection?

Good hand hygiene is essential – wash your hands regularly and change gloves between tasks.

Social distancing.

Testing yourself.

Self-isolating.

Keep your nails short, clean and free from varnish.

Ensure jewellery is kept to a minimum.

Keep your home clean i.e. regularly dispose of clinical waste, such as incontinence pads.

Wear personal protective equipment (PPE).

What can happen if I don’t prevent and control infection?

The impact of infection is wide ranging from the superficial to life threatening and includes social, psychological and physical effects.

Physical Effects
  • Pain.
  • Longer recovery time.
  • May need hospitalisation.
Psychological Effects
  • Increased anxiety and stress.
  • Increased fear.
  • Increased frustration.
Social Effects
  • Family members and/or friends will not be able to visit.
  • You will not be able to get out into the community.
