Top rated carer of the month
Often, it’s the little things in life that can make all the difference and it’s that attention to detail that resulted in Melody Matesva being hailed recently as our top rated carer of the month.
“The most important thing is to treat each customer as an individual,” said Melody.
“Small things can make a big difference to how someone feels and so I take time to listen and to learn how they like things done.”
Melody gives the everyday cereal Weetabix as an example. To some people it may seem unimportant but to someone needing home care support that first meal can set the tone for the rest of the day.
“Most will like Weetabix with cold milk, but some will prefer warm milk and some will prefer it mashed up,” said Melody.
“Learning someone’s preference and getting it right every day is important, you are showing respect and gaining trust.”
Building a better future in care
After leaving college Melody worked for 16 years as a school secretary before deciding to leave her home in Zimbabwe to travel to the UK with her husband and their son and train in the care sector.
“We wanted to build a better future so when the opportunity to work in care arose, I went for it,” said Melody. “It was a new job and my first time abroad, so I was nervous but eager to give it a go.”
Melody has been with us for two years now and has successfully completed several training courses to enable her to carry out home care support – including moving and handling, safeguarding, infection control and medication.
The award reflects feedback from customers
The family have settled well in the UK with Melody’s husband working in construction and their son hoping to become a social worker after completing his A-Levels. Melody has used holidays to visit her family in Africa.
The top performer award reflects feedback from her customers and Melody said winning it came as a big surprise.
“It is lovely to be recognised in this way, I felt I was just doing my job,” she said. “I really enjoy care work, helping people who are vulnerable makes me feel good.”
