Pauline Kanyi made the switch to the care sector having spent the first 15 years of her working life in insurance. She admits she was a little nervous at first, however the detailed induction, support and training given to all new staff we employ gave her the confidence to succeed and now she’s thriving.

Pauline successfully completed her three months probationary period and is now studying for her Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care whilst working full-time in home care support

“I found that Caremark really value their staff, they want you to be properly trained so you can feel confident in the job and deliver the best care possible to clients,” said Pauline.

After leaving school in Kenya, Pauline gained college qualifications in Insurance Proficiency and Human Resources and then worked in the insurance sector, progressing to the post of senior marketer. After 15 years she decided she needed a change and took the opportunity to travel to the UK to join the care sector.

Empathy and getting to know customers is key

During her probationary period with us, Pauline completed various online and face to face training modules covering all aspects of the job, ranging from legislation to how to safely manoeuvre clients with mobility issues.

Pauline found the communication skills she learned interacting with people one to one during her insurance work have been of great benefit in the care sector. She believes that having empathy and spending time to get to know the customers and their individual needs is key to the job.

They appreciate the work I do

“If you go into someone’s house with confidence and a smile it is re-assuring for the customer and helps to break down any barriers,” said Pauline.

“One customer told me I am the only person they see all day and how much they appreciate the work I do. Those words were beautiful to hear and made my day.”

Pauline’s husband Moses works for the Post Office and their 16-year-old daughter Neema has settled well at school where she plans to stay on to study science “A” levels and then take an engineering degree.

As a family, they like to visit Church and travel in the UK and abroad.
