Donna has found her true calling

After a career spent working in residential and home-based older people’s care, Donna Mosley found herself at a crossroads – and now, just a month into her role as a Support Worker with Caremark Rotherham and Sheffield, she believes she has finally found her true calling.

Although she had enjoyed many aspects of the ‘traditional’ care work, the long hours and emotional strain were beginning to take a toll on both her and her family.

It was during this period of reflection that she decided it was time for a change and to do something different that felt “more like me”.

That something different was complex care and even though she didn’t know what to expect, Donna says she already feels at home.

“It doesn’t feel like a job”

She now supports several of our clients and has developed early relationships that reflect warmth and genuine connection

Donna says biggest difference between older people’s care and complex care lies not in the actual tasks, but in the overall experience.

“It doesn’t feel like a job,” she says.

 “I’m like a big kid myself so it’s fun and I get to spend meaningful time with clients, helping them enjoy social activities and time in the community.”

The work-life balance she has always craved

Donna says being a mum has also helped her to settle quickly in new role. One of her children has ADHD and her nephew is autistic and non-verbal, so complex care is something she has already experienced in her personal life.

One of the most profound impacts of her career change has been reclaiming her family life. In her previous role, Donna says she often worked late into the evening, picking up her daughter only to bring her home long past bedtime.

“She kept saying she missed me and I knew it was affecting her,” says Donna.

Now, she enjoys school-friendly hours and more consistency.

She adds: “It’s a lot better. I’m finishing just before school pick-up and weekends are more manageable too, so it has given me the work-life balance I have always craved.

“Older people’s care gave me knowledge and experience, but this job feels right.”
