Working at Caremark is like being in one big happy family

When staff at Caremark Redcar and Cleveland’s say working there is like being in one big happy family, they’re literally not wrong. That’s because out of our 370 employees, around 15% (52 people) are related to each other in one form or another.
Whether it’s husband and wife, mum and daughter, sisters, brothers or aunts and uncles, it really has become a family affair at the company. It provides support to over 650 people in their homes in the Redcar and Cleveland area.
There are also several examples of staff whose own family members receive homecare from Caremark.
Among those who work for Caremark include Sophie Smith. Her husband Andrew and mum Susan also joined as Care Assistants after her.
The customers become part of your own family
Sophie explains: “My dad had a brain tumour and Caremark Redcar and Cleveland supported him and my mum. Seeing how good they were with him inspired me to go into it. It was the best decision I have made because I love my job.
“Mum and Andrew could see how much I was enjoying being a carer so they didn’t take much persuading to join. It’s great to be part of such a family-friendly company.”
Andrew was working as a Manager at McDonalds before he followed Sophie to Caremark a few months later.
He says: “I was looking for a change of direction. Even though I do more hours now, I actually see my family more because of the way the shift patterns work. I wouldn’t change what I do now for the world.
“Even when we are both off, Sophie and I still talk about work because we are wondering what our customers are doing and if they are ok. They effectively become part of the family.”

Putting smiles on customers’ faces makes it the perfect job for me
Until Susan joined Caremark, she was looking after her daughter Emma who has Down’s Syndrome. However, with Emma becoming an adult and having more independence, she also decided to join Caremark.
Susan says: “It was nerve-wracking when I first started because it was something completely different. But it’s the perfect job for me because I like putting smiles on people’s faces. It’s nice to be able to share my experiences with Sophie and Andrew.”
As a result of the family working at Caremark, Emma has now also become one of the company’s customers.
“Emma gets social-based support and is thriving,” adds Susan.
“It helps that I already know the girls who support her and trust them completely with her.”
Danielle Laverick, Care Manager at Caremark Redcar and Cleveland, said: “We pride ourselves on being a family-friendly employer. This is reflected by the fact we have so many people working for us who are related.”
