A fantastic couple of years professionally and personally
It’s been quite a few years for Nicky both professionally and personally, with his partner moving from Canada to live with him and subsequently giving birth to their first son.
Nicky was working in retail before he joined Caremark Redcar and Cleveland.
He explains: “I was working in retail when the lockdowns happened and for personal reasons, I moved back to Middlesbrough so I was looking for a new job and I saw an advert for Caremark.
“My sister and other families have worked in care so I thought I would give it a try and I am glad I did because I love my job!”
Supported living scheme support
Nicky initially worked in our traditional homecare service and whilst he still does this, he now predominantly provides care and support at one of the four supported living schemes we work at.
Here he has built some fantastic relationships with the residents who have additional needs.
“It’s very different than the traditional homecare where the people you visit tend to be much older, but I do enjoy working with the residents,” says Nicky.
“It can be challenging at times but it’s worth it when you see the happiness on their faces when you are with them.”
Looking to the future and progression within Caremark
Nicky says he was delighted to receive the Carer of the Year award.
“I knew something was up because my supervisor Emma kept pestering me to attend the awards, but I am glad I did because this is a big accomplishment for me,” he adds.
“It was nice to hear all the compliments about me being written down on paper and read out at the awards; I was like WOW!
“I never thought I would get this far with this career. I initially thought it was just going to be a short-term thing, but now I am looking to the future and want to progress further here.”
Outside of work, Nicky enjoys spending time with his partner and their son and indulging his love of cars.
“The last few years couldn’t have worked out any better for me,” he says.
