A member of staff from Caremark Redcar and Cleveland who became a carer to help him overcome personal challenges in his life has seen his efforts rewarded with a learner of the award from a leading North-East training provider.
Ross Thomas was named Vision Training North East’s Learner of the Year 2025. He impressed his tutors with his “exceptional perseverance and focus”.
The 33-year-old, from Redcar, only started working as a Care Assistant with Caremark Redcar and Cleveland three years ago. This was after a period of personal hardship. During that time, he balanced caring responsibilities at home with financial pressures and family health challenges.
He admits to being stuck in a rut. However, he has now found new purpose in his life as a result of supporting a Caremark customer who himself faces daily living challenges. These include communication difficulty and autism.

Ross is an outstanding learner
Ross provides live-in care support to the gentlemen and says this has resulted in a bond developing between them.
And in between his care responsibilities, Ross was studying for a Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care with Vision Training North East. This is the company which works closely with Caremark to develop its staff.
Cheron Moore, Ross’s Tutor from Vision Training North East, said: “Throughout his learning journey, Ross has faced considerable personal challenges. Despite this, he has remained fully committed to his studies, demonstrating exceptional perseverance and focus.
“Ross consistently attended sessions, engaged positively with his tutor and worked diligently to meet all deadlines and expectations.
“His unwavering dedication to completing the qualification under such demanding circumstances is truly inspiring and reflects the qualities of an outstanding learner. His journey is a clear example of resilience, commitment and the impact of believing in yourself, even when faced with adversity.”
“I love making a difference in somebody else’s life”
Ross says he was “shocked but honoured” by the award. He saw it as validation for the effort he has invested in both his learning and his work.
“Getting out of the house to start working for Caremark was the best thing I could have done for myself as I was not in a great place at that time,” explains Ross.
“I love doing what I do because I have not been very good in my own life through the decisions I have made, but I am making a difference in somebody else’s life and ultimately this is making me a better person too.”
Michelle Jackson, Caremark Redcar and Cleveland Managing Director, said: “We’re very proud of Ross and what he has achieved personally and professionally.
“He is a fantastic carer who has made a massive difference to the life of the gentlemen he supports and is fully deserving of the recognition he has received.”
