Lead an independent life
A stroke can completely transform a person’s life but with the help of carers they can still lead an independent life enjoying their own interests in their own home – just ask Sharon Meszaros.
Sharron spent 22 years working at her local hospital. She began as a cleaner and rose through the ranks to become manager of a team of ancillary staff.
Always a lover of beautiful flowers, it was whilst she was in her garden 15 years ago that she collapsed to the ground. A relative realised she had suffered a massive stroke.
“They called an ambulance straight away. It was a good job they did, or I might not have survived,” said Sharron. “I have been paralysed down my right side ever since and left housebound.”
The carers are patient, kind and caring
Sharron was treated in hospital and a care plan put in place. This included a move to new accommodation as she was unable to manage the steps at her old home.
Carers from Caremark Mansfield & Ashfield visit four times a day to help Sharron. She also has the support of relatives who visit regularly.
Carers help her to use her shower and get ready each day support with domestic tasks. They then to get ready for bed every evening.
“I can’t bite into food or use a knife so they cut my meals up so I’m able to just use a fork or spoon,” said Sharron.
“They are patient, kind and caring. I speak slowly and don’t like to be rushed and they understand that and take time to listen.”
I chat to the carers about Love Island!
Sharron, 61, is still able to enjoy her lifelong love of flowers and flower arranging. Relatives will buy them during the weekly shop and leave them in a sink so carers can unwrap them for Sharron to arrange when she is ready. They also feed her cat Dolly, Sharon’s companion for the past 13 years.
During the day Sharron enjoys watching various sports on TV as much for the fashions and flowers of Royal Ascot or Wimbledon as the sports action.
And she looks forward to chatting with her carers as they go about their work.
“It is nice to catch up on things, sometimes I save Love Island to watch when the carers visit so we can have a chat about that,” said Sharron.
