As temperatures begin to fall, heating costs can become a growing concern for older people and their families. For people living in Lewisham, the Winter Fuel Payment in Lewisham could provide useful help towards heating bills during winter 2026 to 2027.There are also other forms of financial and practical support available locally, including help through Lewisham Council and national schemes such as the Warm Home Discount.

Here is what you need to know.

Who can get the Winter Fuel Payment in Lewisham?

For winter 2026 to 2027, you may be eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment if you were born on or before 27 June 1960 and usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Most eligible people will receive the payment automatically.

The amount you receive depends on your age and household circumstances during the qualifying week, which for 2026 is 21 to 27 September 2026.

If you live alone, or nobody else you live with is eligible, the payment is generally:

  • £200 if you were born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960
  • £300 if you were born before 28 September 1946

Different amounts can apply where more than one eligible person lives in the household.

You can check the full eligibility rules through the Government’s Winter Fuel Payment guidance.

Winter Fuel Payment in Lewisham and the £35,000 income threshold

One important change is how income affects the payment.

Eligible people can still receive the Winter Fuel Payment, but if your individual total income is over £35,000, HMRC will recover the payment through your tax code or Self Assessment.

Your partner’s income is not included when deciding whether your own income exceeds the threshold.

This means someone with income above £35,000 may initially receive the payment but later repay the full amount through the tax system.

However, some people who do not receive these benefits may need to make a claim.

The deadline to claim is 31 March 2027.

When will the Winter Fuel Payment be paid?

Most eligible people should receive their payment automatically during November or December 2026.

A letter should arrive in October or November confirming how much you will receive and which bank account it will be paid into.

If you believe you are eligible but have not received a letter or payment by 27 January 2027, GOV.UK advises you to contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

The council specifically highlights help for residents who are over 65, have a low income, or live with a long-term health condition or disability.

Keeping older people safe during colder weather

Financial support is important, but staying warm is also a health issue.

During colder months, families may want to check that an older relative:

  • Is able to keep the main living areas comfortably warm
  • Has enough warm clothing and bedding
  • Is eating regular hot meals
  • Has access to medication and prescriptions
  • Can safely use their heating
  • Has someone checking in regularly
  • Knows where to seek help if energy costs become difficult to manage

Small changes can make a meaningful difference during prolonged periods of cold weather.
