The feeling of absolute hopelessness

Anyone who has watched helplessly as a loved one battles with dementia knows the feeling of absolute hopelessness. In Ian’s case, it is even more difficult. He sees this cruel disease take a grip of his long-term partner George.
This is despite being a former mental health nurse who cared for people with dementia during his professional life. Despite his experience, there is very little he can now do for the man he loves.
“It’s harder when it’s a loved one who lives with you and not a patient in a care facility where the environment is very different. You have other people to support you there,” says Ian.
Ian and George, a former hairdresser, met at a dog show. Ian was showing dogs, and George was a judge.
They moved from West Yorkshire and lived in Wales for 20 years. However, as George’s vascular dementia worsened, Ian wanted to bring him back home. They moved closer to their family.

The team of Care Assistants are “smashing”
We started supporting George and Ian earlier in 2025, with our Care Assistants visiting twice and day to support George.
This also provides Ian with some much-needed respite. He knows he can leave George in good hands whilst he visits his sister-in-law.
“We are more than happy with Caremark, the whole team of carers we have are smashing,” says Ian.
