Inspired

Lily Meadows knew from an early age she wanted to work in healthcare after being inspired by the work of paramedics on the television programme 999: On The Frontline.

Following a work placement with Caremark Kirklees, as part of her T-Level studies at Kirklees College, she made such a positive impression that we offered her a full-time job with our home care support team after just two months.

That led to her winning a prestigious “best outcome” award from the college and has opened the door for Lily, 18, to gain further qualifications and experience.

“I’ve had tremendous support since joining Caremark,” said Lily. “It is so rewarding to be working with a range of clients and making a difference to their lives.”

Carer of the Year

Lily has now followed up her college award with another from Caremark Kirklees, recently being named the Carer of the Year for the Colne Valley area.

The citation praised Lily’s dedication and compassion saying. It read: “Lily is always willing to help out where needed and never lets the team down. With her hard work, commitment and determination, we are very proud to have her as a part of our Caremark family.”

During her time with Caremark, Lily has received extensive training including in techniques such as PEG feeding and helping clients with complex needs. She also hopes to study for her Level 3 NVQ in Health and Social Care.

Important qualities

She believes important qualities for a carer include being understanding, reliable, professional and empathetic.

“You need to appreciate when someone is having a tough day and support in the best way possible,” she said.

“Mental health is as important as physical. Chatting with clients, encouraging them to get ready for the day puts them in a better place and helps them to remain as mobile and active as possible.”

Outside of work Lily loves shopping for shoes and clothes and is looking forward to a holiday with her boyfriend on the Balearic Island Formentera.

However, her mind is never far away from achieving her ultimate goal, to become a paramedic like the ones that inspired her when, as a ten-year-old, she watched them on television.

“It’s a very tough profession to get into but I’m determined to get there,” said Lily.

“I love my job with Caremark and it is all good experience that will hopefully help me to one day become a paramedic.”
