Why is World Alzheimer’s Month important?

Through the month of September there is a international campaign that takes place every year to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The campaign aims to challenge the stigma and misinformation surrounding Alzheimer’s and to advocate for better understanding, support, and care for those affected by the disease.

During World Alzheimer’s Month, various organizations, healthcare professionals, caregivers, and individuals around the world participate in activities and events to promote dementia awareness and education. These activities may include:

  1. Public lectures and seminars on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
  2. Information sessions and workshops on caregiving and dementia care.
  3. Fundraising events to support research and support services.
  4. Art exhibitions, storytelling, and creative activities to showcase the experiences of those living with dementia.
  5. Social media campaigns to share information, stories, and resources.
  6. Memory walks and runs to raise funds and awareness.
  7. The distribution of informational materials and resources.

The goal of World Alzheimer’s Month is to encourage governments, policymakers, and healthcare providers to prioritize dementia as a public health issue and to work towards improving dementia care, early diagnosis, and support for individuals and their families. It also serves as a reminder of the global impact of Alzheimer’s disease and the urgent need for research to find better treatments and, ultimately, a cure for this devastating condition.
