Caremark Greenwich becomes a Dementia Friend!
What is Dementia?
Dementia is not a single disease but a broad term describing a collection of symptoms resulting from various diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease. These diseases cause abnormal changes in the brain, leading to a decline in cognitive abilities (thinking skills) severe enough to interfere with daily life and independence. Dementia also affects behaviour, emotions, and relationships.
Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60-80% of dementia cases. Vascular dementia, the second most common cause, results from microscopic bleeding and blood vessel blockages in the brain. Mixed dementia occurs when a person experiences brain changes associated with multiple types of dementia simultaneously. Additionally, several conditions can cause cognitive impairment symptoms but are not classified as dementia, such as thyroid problems and vitamin deficiencies, which are sometimes reversible.
