The unexpected pleasures of working in homecare

Life can throw up unexpected pleasures and during her time with Caremark, Onsi Sherawat has discovered one of them. For the past three years Onsi has been working in care support and travelling to help customers in their homes has given her the chance to discover local villages in her patch of Gloucester, Tewkesbury and Cheltenham.
“I hadn’t realised that there would be so much driving but I really enjoy it,” said Onsi. “
This is a beautiful, rural area and it’s lovely each day to see the countryside, parkland and villages.”
Onsi’s positivity is clear to see. Even on a bad day she sees a silver lining.
“There are bound to be days when things don’t go right, perhaps the customer is upset,” she said. “You can always learn from that, things you might do differently next time, it makes you a getter carer.”

Caring was her destiny
Growing up in India, Onsi used to help her grandparents and that led her to realise a career in caring was her destiny.
“It is within my nature to care for people, if I see someone struggling in the street I will always try to help,” she said.
Onsi moved to the UK after applying for a sponsored post with Caremark and she says the process was simple.
“Caremark helped with all the paperwork and I found it very straightforward,” she said. “Once here the training provided was good and prepared me for the job.”
She advises anyone thinking of a career in care to first look after their own health.
“You need to be hard working and focussed and maintaining good health is also very important,” she said. “If you want to give your best when looking after others you need to make sure you are in good health yourself.”
