Stand beside her family
For Janet and her family, the wedding day was always going to be special. It was a day filled with love, celebration and family memories. But for Janet, there was one moment that meant more than anything else. She wanted to stand beside her family in the church as her grandson got married.
After suffering a life-changing haemorrhagic stroke in October 2023, that simple wish was anything but simple. Janet had experienced a significant brain injury, left-sided weakness, loss of speech and difficulty swallowing. Her confidence and independence had been deeply affected. After a long stay in hospital she returned home needing complex support, specialist equipment and the help of staff from Caremark Great Dunmow.
When Daisy became Janet’s main carer in April 2024, she quickly understood that good care was about far more than completing daily tasks. Janet could not always communicate with words, so Daisy learned to listen in other ways. She noticed Janet’s expressions, gestures and small signals. She built a relationship based on patience, trust and respect. Janet’s husband, Ray, also became part of that circle of support. He knew Daisy was there not only to provide care, but to help Janet feel safe, understood and encouraged.
The moment she imagined
Then came the goal that gave each day a new purpose. Janet wanted to be at her grandson’s wedding in May 2026. She wanted to stand in the church with her family. Daisy held onto that goal with her. Working alongside NHS and private physiotherapy teams, she supported Janet with daily exercises. She gently encouraged her through the slow, difficult steps of rehabilitation.
Progress did not happen all at once. It came in small, hard-won moments: a movement of the leg, lifting enough to help with socks, sitting at the edge of the bed, building strength through repeated practice. Each achievement mattered. Each one brought Janet a little closer to the church, to her family and to the moment she had imagined.

With Daisy’s consistent support, Janet moved from being hoisted for all transfers to using a seat to stand transfer aid. Later, she began practising standing from the bed and sitting back down safely. At first, one attempt was exhausting. But Daisy continued to encourage her with warmth and belief. She helped Janet practise day by day until standing became part of her routine.
On 24 May 2026, Janet achieved what had once seemed out of reach. After two years of determination, family support, professional rehabilitation and Daisy’s steady encouragement, Janet stood in the church at her grandson’s wedding.
It was more than a physical milestone. It was a moment of dignity, pride and connection. For Janet, Ray and their family, it showed just how powerful compassionate care can be. This happens when it is built around the person, their hopes and the life they still want to live.
