Being a mum

Kehinde ‘Kemi’ Aina says being a mum has been a major help in her role as a Support Worker with Caremark Rotherham and Sheffield. Raising children close in age to the young people she supports means Kemi naturally understands the things which frustrate or comfort them. She also understands how quickly their feelings and emotions can change.

The mum-of-four says she draws on the experience of raising her own children. This includes staying calm during the moments when our young clients display particularly challenging behaviour.

This is especially important when supporting clients like Willow. These clients can experience prolonged periods of emotional breakdown which need careful and professional handling on a 2:1 basis.

Kemi says this emotional resilience enables her to provide stability and reassurance to clients who may be distressed. It also helps clients who are in a heightened state.

Anticipation and responsiveness is key in complex care

“Being a mum has definitely made me more comfortable and prepared,” she explains.

“It’s all about anticipating and reacting to triggers, responding with empathy, using a calm tone and soothing language which can often help to de-escalate a situation.

“In Willow’s case you can often recognise the early signs just by looking into her eyes or facial expression. Then it’s about approaching her with empathy, flexibility and understanding.”

A family rooted in caregiving

Kemi has worked at Caremark for just over a year. Whilst this is the first time she has worked in complex care, she has extensive experience in the care sector.

Originally from Nigeria, Kemi has lived in the UK for more than three years. She comes from a family rooted in caregiving, having looked after her grandmother living with dementia.

She says this personal history shapes her professional identity and reinforces her passion for care.

“I value the emotional connection I form with clients and take pride in creating safe, positive experiences for them,” she adds.

“I draw on my experience as a mum and it has helped me understand the emotional world of the children and young people we support.”
