A life full of stories
From a fifth-generation fishmonger and model-turned florist, to a couple celebrating more than seven decades together, Pat and Ray Bush have lived a life full of stories. Today, with support from Caremark Great Dunmow, they continue to enjoy that life in the place they love most their own home.
Some love stories begin with a grand gesture. Others begin with years of friendship.
For Pat and Ray Bush, it all started when they were just 14 and 15 years old. More than 70 years later, they’re still together.
“We met when we were 14 and 15,” Pat says with a smile. “Our children always say we’re still like kids.”
That youthful spirit has carried them through decades of marriage, family life, business success, health challenges and countless adventures.
Now aged 87 and 88, the couple have built a lifetime of memories together and remain devoted to one another.
An extraordinary beginning
Pat’s early career was far from ordinary.
Originally trained as a graphic artist, she attended art school at a time when opportunities for women were limited.
“When I came out of art school, I couldn’t get a job because I was a woman,” she recalls.
Her father, himself a graphic artist, famously took her portfolio to a prospective employer and challenged their assumptions. The company agreed to give Pat an opportunity, although under conditions that would be unthinkable today – that if she didn’t “fit in” with all the men within the month she would have to leave!
It was the start of a career that led her into an unexpected world. Working within the creative industry, Pat found herself appearing in advertising mock-ups and publicity materials. Before long, those opportunities evolved into modelling work.
“I was actually earning more money as a model than I was as a graphic artist at one point,” she laughs.
While modelling offered excitement, Pat quickly realised it wasn’t the future she wanted.
“I didn’t like the attitude of the industry,” she says. “It wasn’t really me.”

Meanwhile, Ray was continuing a proud family tradition.
A fifth-generation fishmonger, he devoted his working life to providing quality fresh fish for customers.
After the couple married in 1960, they became deeply involved in the family business, serving their local community and building a reputation based on hard work and personal service.
For years, the business thrived, but changing times eventually caught up with the industry.
As supermarkets expanded and frozen products became more common, independent fishmongers found it increasingly difficult to compete.
“Ray always believed in selling fresh fish,” Pat explains. “He didn’t want to move into frozen products.”
When the couple took a hard look at the future, an opportunity was staring them in the face. Pat’s own floristry business was flourishing.
The fish business closed and in its place grew something completely different.
“We literally turned a fish shop into a florist shop and I used to ask my customers if they could still smell the fish,” Pat laughs.
What followed was another successful chapter. Pat and Ray spent around three decades running their flourishing floristry business, creating beautiful arrangements and serving customers until health concerns eventually persuaded her to retire.
Family at the heart of everything
Alongside their careers, Pat and Ray raised two daughters and watched their family grow through grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Their daughters remain a huge source of support and pride.
“They’ve been incredible,” says Pat.
That family support became especially important when Ray faced significant health challenges.
Over recent years, he has undergone treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy.
“It’s been a long journey,” says Pat. “But he’s still here, and that’s all that matters.”
More recently, after Ray suffered a broken arm, the family began discussing whether some additional support at home might be beneficial.
Initially, Pat wasn’t convinced and like many couples who have spent a lifetime looking after each other, accepting help wasn’t easy.
But their daughters encouraged them to think carefully about the future and the practical realities of life at home.
Thankfully, that decision led them to Caremark Great Dunmow. The couple began receiving support from us earlier this year following Ray’s injury. Having experienced care services before and not always finding them a good fit, they approached the arrangement with some caution. Those concerns quickly disappeared.
“They are incredible,” says Pat.
The support provided is focused on helping Ray maintain his independence and wellbeing at home. Care assistants help with personal care each morning and support him with exercises designed to aid his mobility and recovery. Just as importantly, they provide reassurance and consistency.
“If I need help with something, I can just phone them,” says Pat. “They’re so kind. If there’s a problem, somebody sorts it out.”
For Pat, who spent decades running her own successful businesses, service matters.
“I know what good customer service looks like,” she says. “And they’re brilliant.”
Among the Caremark team, one person has made a particularly lasting impression. Care Assistant Will has formed a genuine friendship with Ray. The two men immediately clicked, sharing conversations, humour and a natural understanding that has become an important part of Ray’s routine.
“When Will’s off, it’s like the tragedy of the week,” Pat jokes. “‘When’s Will coming back?’ is all I hear.”
For someone who has faced significant health challenges over recent years, having someone who can make him laugh and lift his spirits is invaluable.
“It helps him feel like himself,” says Pat.
“Will has got a very special way about him. He’s professional, he’s caring, and he’s always on the ball. If I had him working for me, I’d cherish him.”
Feeling safe at home
For Pat, perhaps the greatest benefit Caremark provides is peace of mind.
Whether it’s adapting care arrangements around hospital appointments, helping solve unexpected problems or simply being available when needed, the team has become a trusted presence in their lives.
“You just feel safe,” she says.
“It’s knowing that somebody is there, somebody knows your situation and somebody will help if you need it.”
After a lifetime spent looking after each other, Pat and Ray are continuing to do exactly that. The difference is that now they have a little extra support from people who genuinely care.
And as they look back on an extraordinary journey that has included art schools, modelling, flower shops, fishmongers, children, grandchildren and more than seven decades of love, one thing remains unchanged.
They’re still the same young couple who met as teenagers all those years ago.
“We’ve had one hell of a life,” says Pat.
And thanks to the support around them, that story is still being written.
