Reducing loneliness and isolation in Barnsley

A new monthly get-together is bringing customers of Caremark Barnsley together with other members of the community. This initiative is aimed at reducing loneliness and isolation.

We have launched a monthly coffee afternoon at Joseph Court sheltered housing scheme in Barnsley. It creates a welcoming space where people can meet, socialise and enjoy a changing programme of activities.

The initiative is designed to bring people together and help tackle loneliness and social isolation. It does this by providing regular opportunities for conversation, companionship and shared experiences.

The chance to build confidence and form friendships

Held on the last Thursday of every month, the coffee afternoon is currently open to Joseph Court tenants and Caremark customers. There are hopes to welcome more people as the event grows.

As well as offering refreshments and entertainment in an informal setting, the sessions give customers and tenants the chance to build confidence, form friendships and feel more connected to their local community. This is particularly important for those who may spend much of their time alone.

The gatherings also create valuable opportunities for Caremark team members to spend quality time with the people they support away from the usual care routine. Furthermore, as the club develops, it could help relatives and friends become more involved. They could also get to know the care team supporting their loved ones, strengthening the relationships that sit at the heart of good home care.

A stronger sense of belonging within their community

The first gathering took place in August and set the tone for the new club. There was live singing and a spread of samosas, cake and scones, helping to create a relaxed and sociable atmosphere. Following the success of the launch, the next coffee afternoon took place on 24th September and featured bingo and nibbles.

We hope the regular sessions will continue to grow, giving more people the chance to enjoy companionship, take part in activities and feel a stronger sense of belonging within their community.
