Dementia Action Week 2025

Why Early Diagnosis Matters More Than Ever
This Dementia Action Week 2025, running from 19–25 May, we’re joining forces with the Alzheimer’s Society to spotlight the critical importance of early dementia diagnosis. With one person developing dementia every three minutes in the UK, timely diagnosis is more crucial than ever.
The Power of Early Diagnosis
Early diagnosis empowers individuals and their families to:
- Access vital support and treatment: Timely intervention can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
- Plan for the future: Understanding the condition allows for better preparation and decision-making.
- Participate in research: Early-stage patients may be eligible for clinical trials, contributing to advancements in treatment.
According to the Alzheimer’s Society, 91% of people affected by dementia see clear benefits to getting a diagnosis.
The Current Landscape
Despite the benefits, 1 in 3 people with dementia in the UK do not have a diagnosis. This gap means many are missing out on essential care and support.
Recognizing the Signs
Early symptoms of dementia can be subtle. Common signs include:
- Memory loss
- Difficulty concentrating
- Confusion about time or place
- Changes in mood or behaviour
If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional. The Alzheimer’s Society offers a helpful symptoms checklist to guide conversations with your GP.
The Role of Healthcare Providers
Healthcare professionals play a pivotal role in early diagnosis. By staying informed about the latest research and diagnostic tools, they can better identify and support patients showing early signs of dementia.

- Educate yourself and others: Share information about dementia and the importance of early diagnosis.
