Seniors living at home

Ageing is an inevitable part of life and it’s important to accept that your needs are likely to change over time, so that you can put measures in place to help ease your way into your later years and ensure you’re able to continue living at home independently for as long as you can.

No doubt remaining at home is a top concern for many of you out there and the good news is that there’s a lot you can do to help facilitate this. Here are just four of the ways in which you could go about easing yourself into retirement and beyond.

Keep moving

Staying as active as you can is an effective way of ensuring that you continue to enjoy good strength and mobility. Regular strength and balance exercises can prove very beneficial, as can walking and even gardening.

Reducing your activity levels over time means your muscles will likely weaken, which can make you more prone to slips, trips and falls.

Have a home evaluation

Making your home safe for you to continue living in is key and there are lots of adaptations you can carry out that will accommodate your changing needs and make your property safer. A home assessment can help you see what needs to be done and where.

Maintain strong social relationships

You need to protect your mental health as well as your physical health and socialising is perfect for doing this. Isolation and loneliness can be problematic as we get older but maintaining strong social and family connections helps to keep mental health problems like stress, anxiety and depression at bay.

Consider at at-home care provider

Take advantage of the different homecare services that are available, everything from occasional assistance with personal care to live-in care options. Doing so will help you remain in your home for as long as you can.
