Alzheimer's care

Each September, World Alzheimer’s Month shines a spotlight on dementia, raising awareness of its impact and encouraging communities to come together in support. Across the UK, thousands of families are affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. At Caremark Thurrock, we are proud to join the global conversation, working alongside the Alzheimer’s Society and local partners to make a difference for older people and their loved ones.

Understanding World Alzheimer’s Month

World Alzheimer’s Month is an international campaign designed to challenge the stigma surrounding dementia and promote greater understanding. According to the Alzheimer’s Society, over 900,000 people are living with dementia in the UK – a number expected to rise sharply over the next decade. Early diagnosis, compassionate care, and community support are crucial in helping those affected maintain theirdignity and independence for as long as possible.

Caremark Thurrock’s Commitment

At Caremark Thurrock, we provide personalised home care for older people with a wide range of support needs, including those living with dementia. Our goal is to enable individuals to remain in their own homes, surrounded by familiar routines and memories. For someone with Alzheimer’s, this sense of continuity can be particularly reassuring.

Caremark Thurrock’s Care Assistants

Our Care Assistants undergo specialist training to understand the unique challenges that dementia can bring. They learn to recognise subtle changes in behaviour, communicate clearly and patiently, and support daily activities in ways that encourage independence. This local, person-centred approach shapes each care plan around the individual – not just their condition.

Collaboration with Alzheimer’s Society

We value our ongoing relationship with the Alzheimer’s Society and share their commitment to creating dementia-friendly communities. By staying up to date with the charity’s research and resources, we can offer the most current advice and support to the families we work with.

We also encourage our staff and clients to take part in Alzheimer’s Society initiatives, such as Memory Walks during World Alzheimer’s Month. These events raise funds for research and provide a sense of solidarity for everyone affected by dementia in Thurrock and beyond.

Supporting Families and Carers

Living with Alzheimer’s can be challenging not only for the person diagnosed but also for family members. We recognise that carers often need guidance, reassurance, and a break from their responsibilities. Caremark Thurrock offers respite care, allowing family carers to rest knowing their loved one is safe and supported.

We also provide information sessions and signposting to local dementia cafés, peer support groups, and helplines. These resources give families the opportunity to share experiences, gain practical tips, and feel less isolated.

Raising Awareness in the Community

World Alzheimer’s Month is an opportunity to talk openly about dementia and break down misconceptions. In Thurrock, we engage with local businesses, schools, and organisations to promote dementia awareness. Small changes – such as clearer signage in public spaces or staff training in dementia-friendly customer service – can make a big difference for older people navigating their community.

Looking Ahead

As the number of people living with dementia continues to grow, so does the need for understanding and high-quality care. Caremark Thurrock remains committed to playing its part – championing the rights of older people, supporting families, and working in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society to create a kinder, more inclusive future.

This World Alzheimer’s Month, we invite everyone in Thurrock to join the conversation, learn more about dementia, and take action to support those affected. Together, we can build a community where people living with Alzheimer’s feel respected, supported, and valued.
