According to research, 1 in 4 people in the UK work in their dream job, and Kirsty Vickers is certainly in this 25% of the population who can safely say that they love what they do for a living!

Kirsty even gave up working for her late father’s very admirable community business company to return to care with Caremark Rotherham and Sheffield, having initially left the sector to help him set it up.

“My dad ran a great not-for-profit business providing interest-free white goods for people on benefits and I spent a few years with him as a Director before realising I missed care too much and wanted to go back into it,” explains Kirsty.

Kirsty’s first experience in care (previous to this she worked in a bakery and a warehouse) came in 2002 when she worked in traditional homecare for mainly older people but did also support a young boy with learning difficulties. Then, in 2007, she moved to work for Sheffield City Council supporting adults with learning disabilities.

After supporting her dad in his business, Kirsty joined Caremark Rotherham and Sheffield as a Support Worker.

“My first client was a young girl with down’s syndrome who also had a tracheostomy, and I would support her at home, school and in the community,” says Kirsty.

“I loved it and having had experience working with the boy with learning disabilities, I knew I was in my dream job.”

Kirsty lives and breathes for her customers and absolutely embodies care excellence which is one of the many reasons why she was promoted to her current role as Case Leader in 2019.

She leads a team of our Support Workers and has a defined customer group which she has an extensive knowledge of our customer’s care needs and requirements together with their aspirations and goals.

There is no average day in Kirsty’s working life, one minute she can be visiting a school and getting to know the SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) lead to review a client’s progress, and the next she can be speaking to Independent Case Manager about a new package of care for a client.

“It’s such a rewarding job,” says Kirsty.

“I love working with our client group, forming bonds with them and seeing them achieve their goals, however large or small these may be.”

Kirsty has completed several further education courses including managing medication, behaviours that challenge and is also working towards her Level 5 Diploma in Health and Social Care. Kirsty is also our CPI Champion and is responsible for delivering the ‘Behaviours of concern’ Training to our new Support Workers. Kirsty is also highly clinically trained and adept at using clinical equipment such as ventilators, cough assist, humidifiers and is trained to work with all our customers who have tracheostomies, suction, and PEG Feeding.

“It’s such a varied job and I work with a great, friendly team who are committed to ensuring our clients thrive and achieve positive outcomes,” she adds.

Outside of work, Kirsty enjoys swimming, going on holidays and spending time with her family. She has two children and two grandchildren and very much enjoys being a ‘Nanny.’
