Diagnosed with dementia

Since David Armstrong was first diagnosed with dementia ten years ago he has been cared for by his wife Joan – supported by their four daughters who visit regularly.
But with Joan now in her seventies and David’s condition worsening, it was clear extra support was needed if David was to be able to stay living in the family home.
“I’d always promised my daughters that if it became too much for me I would get help and that time arrived about a year ago,” said Joan. “
A social worked mentioned Caremark Redcar and Cleveland and I had heard of other families who were pleased with the service so we got in touch.”
Personal care, medication support and social interaction
The home support team from Caremark Redcar and Cleveland now visit four times a week offering a combination of personal care, checking on medication and social interaction – taking David out for a few hours, including shopping trips or walks with the family’s spaniel Charlie.
“They have been an absolute Godsend both for David and for me,” said Joan. “David loves to have some different company and it allows me a break, some time for myself, to get some jobs done or to see friends.”

David, 77, used to work as a gardener with a sideline running a karaoke show, whilst Joan, 73, worked for 20 years in care home kitchens – experience that gave her insight into dementia.
They enjoyed holidays all over the world and it was during one of these over a decade ago that David first confided to Joan he felt he may be suffering dementia.
I couldn’t cope without the support of Caremark
“His father had dementia and David had started forgetting a few things, “said Joan.
“At first you think that’s what everyone does when they get older but David said to me he thought he was going like his Dad.”
Though various treatments have helped slow down the decline David now struggles with his memory and has become increasingly confused and frustrated at times. Joan says she couldn’t cope without the support of Caremark.
“The carers do a brilliant job and all our family have warmed to them, including Charlie,” said Joan.
“I am so grateful for their patience, their understanding of David’s needs and how they bring the best out of him.”
