Work life balance

The flexibility of hours available at Caremark Leeds Bradford, and the options that offers for those seeking a better work life balance, can open the sector to a wide range of people.

Sunita Rani started took a part time job alongside her Masters Degree at Leeds Beckett University working night shifts on a bakery production line.

“It was 9pm-5.30am, very intense and physically demanding kneading the dough into shape,” said Sunita.

“You couldn’t stop for a minute and I was very, very tired.”

A friend recommended working in care and Sunita applied to join the home care support team at Caremark Leeds.

“I just thought I’d give it a try and three years on I’m still here,” said Sunita.

“It’s about helping people to help themselves. I found the job came naturally to me, it’s a lot easier than working in a bakery and more enjoyable.”

Sunita, 26, worked around her studies and after completion of her degree in Supply Chain Management and Logistics has been able to take more hours on, working up to 45 a week through choice.

Like all starters she spent time shadowing an experienced carer which Sunita says helped her a lot. Now she has completed her University studies she hopes to take advantage of the opportunity Caremark offers to gain care qualifications whilst working.

“I would like to progress my career in the sector and that opportunity is there,” said Sunita.

“Of course, with all jobs the pay is important but in caring you also receive a blessing, you are helping people, so what could be better than that?”

Outside of work Sunita relaxes by walking near water which she finds calming. She enjoys travelling with husband alternating between visiting relatives in India and exploring other parts of the world – next on the to do list is Dubai and Paris. 

To anyone thinking of joining the sector she has the following advice.

“This is not just a job, you have to believe in the role, treat people the way you would want yourself or your family to be treated.”
