The desire to stay living in your own home

An illness or accident can change someone’s life in an instant and if they are unable to look after themselves that can mean moving into a care home has to be considered. For many people the desire to stay living in your own home is overwhelming and with the help of family and support from Caremark Leeds, that can be achieved.

That’s the case for Charles Mather, 74, who had to use a wheelchair following a fall but enjoys his life living at home with wife Angela, 70, their daughter Kerry and their toddler granddaughter.

The couple first met when Angela was 15 and had just left school to work at the tailor’s shop where Charles also worked. They have been married for over 50 years and have four other children as well as Kerry, and several grandchildren.

A care plan was drawn up to meet Charles’s needs

Ten years ago Charles suffered a fall downstairs at home. He spent five months in three different hospitals before endocarditis was diagnosed and he returned home in a wheelchair.

“It was a complete change for Charlie. He used to be active, doing decorating and gardening but since then he has been housebound,” said Angela.

A care plan was drawn up to enable Charles to remain living at the family home. To start with the home care support team from Caremark Leeds visited twice a day, which has since been reduced to a single visit every morning.

Charles benefits from companionship

“They help Charlie get out of bed, get showered and dressed and ready for breakfast,” said Angela.

She says she also benefits from the social side of Charles having another person to chat to is also good.

“Charlie likes to keep up to date with the news, he gets on well with the carer and can have a good chat with them about politics, which I can’t stand,” Claire adds.

“It’s time each morning I’m able to do other things without worrying about Charlie.”

Daughter Kerry also appreciates the help.

“Most of the time we are ok looking after dad but in a morning I have to be out for work so it gives me peace of mind to know there is someone calling in to help mum with dad,” she says.
