Switch careers

Bose Okafor decided during the Covid pandemic that she wanted to switch careers to one in which she could make a difference to people’s lives.

After leaving school she gained qualifications and secured an important job working for a Government department in Nigeria carrying out administration and planning. Then the pandemic struck.

“People were suffering during lockdown and I wanted to do something to contribute and so I joined the health sector as a nurse aid in a hospital,” she said.

“In 2023 I re-located to the UK and have been working in the home care support since then.”

Bose, who hopes to gain further qualifications in Health and Social Care whilst working for Caremark Leeds Bradford, says patience and the ability to listen are vital skills for a job which can be very rewarding.

“Working in home care support makes you appreciate life more,” said Bose. “It gives you an opportunity to make a difference by helping people to move forward in their lives.”

Bose has just returned back from a holiday in Nigeria. Outside of work her life revolves around family life with her husband and their two boys, enjoying meals and trips to the park. However, her work is never far from her mind.

“The key with this job is to think why you want to do it. If it is about money then it probably isn’t right for you, if it is about caring and how you can improve someone’s life then you will be successful.”
