Early GP Visits

Susan Compton speaks from experience when she advises people to see their GP the moment any health concerns arise. Early GP visits can be crucial in detecting issues promptly. Having faced a serious condition that could have been caught earlier, Susan knows firsthand how important it is not to delay. Her story is a powerful reminder that early intervention can make all the difference. This applies not just in treatment options, but in outcomes and peace of mind. Therefore, do not underestimate the significance of early GP visits.

When a sore developed in her foot she thought it would just go away after a few days. However, gradually it grew worse and worse. Regular early visits to a GP could have altered this outcome.

“I had delayed going to the doctor thinking it was nothing. When I did go he sent me straight to hospital,” said Susan about her lack of early GP visits.

“I have diabetes and the wound had become infected and I needed to stay in hospital for two operations.”

Care plan was drawn up

It was clear Susan’s mobility would be severely impacted during recovery. So whilst she was in hospital, a care plan was drawn up with Caremark Leeds Bradford, Susan’s family and health and social care professionals. This plan would enable her to return to her home to recover.

Caremark now visit every morning to help Susan with personal care. They also check she’s managed breakfast and medication. This continues the support considered in those initial GP meetings.

Making good progress following early GP visit

“The carers are brilliant, I couldn’t wish for a better team,” said Susan, 69. “They are friendly, we have a laugh and a joke and I look forward to seeing them.”

Son Nathaniel lives nearby and is able to pop in most days to see mum. He takes her shopping in her wheelchair or spends time in the garden. These supportive visits complement the outcomes of those first GP consultations.

“I think it’s also a relief for Nathaniel to know someone is calling in to see me when he can’t be there,” said Susan.

“The podiatrist says I am making good progress. My advice to everyone is see the GP as soon as you feel unwell. Don’t hesitate to use Caremark Leeds Bradford if you need support at home.”
