Communication degree has proved invaluable

Judith Obiri has found her degree in Development Communication has proved invaluable in her work in home care support with Caremark Leeds and Caremark Bradford.
“A customer might be recovering from a stroke or have dementia which can restrict the ability to communicate,” said Judith. “
I have learned techniques that can help and clients are so grateful when someone takes the time to try to understand them.”
She says this breakthrough can lead to clients opening up, talking about their health and also enjoying chats about their families and the lives they have led.
“They are so appreciative when someone takes the time to try to understand what they are saying,” said Judith.

A wonderful sense of fulfilment you don’t get in many jobs
Raised in Ghana, Judith always had a wish to work in the care sector.
“I am someone who has always cared about vulnerable people and I saw moving to the UK as a chance to expand my experience,” she said.
Outside of work she enjoys spending days off with her husband and their two young children. She also likes to bring them a taste of home by batch cooking a favourite recipe for the traditional West African dish of Jollof Rice.
Whilst working with Caremark Judith has taken the opportunity to study for her NVQ 3 and she hopes one day to do a Master’s Degree in Health and Social Care.
“What makes being a carer special is when a customer says you are kind,” said Judith. “That gives a wonderful sense of fulfilment that you don’t get in many other jobs.”
