Joan

When Joan Sagar suffered balance and mobility issues that required a stay in hospital there were fears she may have to leave her home of 40 years and move into care.

But with the support of Caremark Kirklees and her family and friends, Joan has been able to return to live at home and maintain an independent life enriched each day by the spectacular views across the moors that surround her cottage.

Joan and her husband used to run a farm in the Calderdale area for many years with livestock and horses, living in a former hunting lodge that dates back 600 years. When her husband died 45 years ago Joan continued to live at the lodge but two years ago needed hospital treatment.

“I fell ill suddenly, and it affected my balance, I couldn’t stand up and had to call an ambulance,” said Joan. “I spent time in hospital and had to undergo physio sessions.”

As she was recovering a care plan was drawn up between Joan, her family and Caremark Kirklees.

We now visit every morning and teatime to help Joan and with her daughter visiting daily and the support of good friends locally, Joan has been able to stay in her home.

“My home is the highest point around and I love the views from my window across the moors,” said Joan.

“I must say Caremark have been very good and have helped me to stay here. I’ve lived in my house for over 40 years, and I don’t ever want to leave.”
