First impressions count
First impressions count and Heleanor MacDonald certainly made a good one when she joined the team at Caremark Kirklees.
Just ten weeks after joining, 19-year-old Heleanor was named carer of the month, in recognition of the professional way she’s settled into her new role.
Before joining Caremark, Heleanor studied criminology, biology and sports at college. She had hoped to gain a place on a paramedic apprenticeship. However, there were no vacancies and so she applied to Caremark.
“I needed a job, and this was one where you didn’t need any previous experience,” said Heleanor. “I also felt it would help if I became a paramedic in the future and it has. I am learning a lot about interacting with people in different circumstances who need help.”
Heleanor says she has learned it’s often the little things in life that can mean the most to clients needing support, the things most of us take for granted.
“One lady hadn’t been able to have a proper shower for months before using Caremark. Now with a double team she has a good shower every week and it has made such a difference to her life,” said Heleanor.
“I think the key is to go in there happy and positive and treat each client as an individual.”
Heleanor decided on the caring profession because she didn’t want an office job and wanted a role that helped people. Outside of work she also likes to keep active, playing hockey and tennis and enjoying running and gym sessions. This summer she’s very much looking forward to a family holiday in France visiting her Nana for an 80th birthday celebration.
She still intends to apply to be a paramedic once an apprenticeship becomes available. In the meantime, she enjoys her work with Caremark.
“I’m really enjoying being part of the team at Caremark. It can be hard both physically and mentally but is so rewarding, every day is different and I’m learning a lot,” she said.
